About

Vicki Thornton is a visual artist and filmmaker working between the cinema and the gallery. Her work combines documentary and fiction filmmaking approaches to examine relationships between site, memory, performance and identity. She received her MA in Photography from the Royal College of Art, London in 2011 and is currently in the final stages of a PhD in Film Practice at Queen Mary, University of London. Her doctoral research project – which has been supported by House of Europe, the Ukrainian Cultural Foundation, Creative Europe, and the British Council – examines processes of theatrical reenactment in post-2014 Ukraine through hybrid documentary, performance and socially engaged art practices.

Between 2016 and 2018, Vicki participated in the British Council Ukraine, Sheffield Doc/Fest and Docudays UA International Human Rights Documentary Film Festival’s DocWorks UA/UK development programme for British and Ukrainian documentary filmmakers and also spent time as artist-in-residence at IZOLYATSIA Platform for Cultural Initiatives, Kyiv as part of the British Council and the Liverpool Biennial’s SWAP UK/Ukraine artists’ residency programme. Her work has recently been shown at the Oleksandr Dovzhenko National Centre, Kyiv; PhotoIreland International Festival of Photography, Dublin; The British Film Institute, London; and Yermilov Centre, Kharkiv.

Vicki is currently Course Leader and Senior Lecturer on the BA (Hons) Photojournalism and Documentary Photography course at London College of Communication.
